About Semaphore Farm
Semaphore Farm is a 400-acre property with convict history, bordering the Port
Artur historic site. It is a private timber reserve and a working forest farm. We have a combination of native eucalypt forest and plantation, and we grow hay and our own beef.
We have many walking and bike trails through 150 acres of forest and pasture accessible to campers.
The campsite has spring water on tap, a hot shower, toilet, rustic camp kitchen, wood stove, gas BBQ, level sites, and a campfire when permitted. Tent sites are flexible so you can choose your own space within a 2-hectare area, while Level pad sites are limited.
The Port Arthur Historic Site and a safe swimming beach are within walking distance and Safety Cove and Remarkable Cave are only a 5-minute drive away. Longer walks, including the Three Capes tracks, are easily accessible.
Launch your boat nearby to access good fishing or fish for squid off the Port Arthur jetty.
There is plenty of wildlife to see at night and birds during the day. You might even see our resident Wedgetail Eagle!
Dog-friendly (must be under control/on a lead/contained).
Total numbers at the site are kept low for a more peaceful experience.
There’s a talk most evenings around 5pm about the local history and gives useful information about the property, wildlife and activities.
SAME-DAY BOOKINGS MUST BE MADE BY 2 PM THANKS.
Arrival Instructions
Please don’t follow Google maps to 70 Lookout Rd – follow these instructions to the camp:
When you arrive at Port Arthur, continue past the historic site entrance and turn left into Safety Cove/Remarkable Cave Rd (if coming from Nubeena, turn right into Safety Cove/Remarkable Cave Rd prior to the Historic site entrance).
After approx. 1km turn right at the fork onto Lookout Rd (dirt rd). The Campground gate is 600m along on the left with the sign “SEMAPHORE FARM since 1966” on it. Follow the track down the hill.
It’s best to arrive before dark as there is no lighting.
If you haven’t made a booking, please phone 0461 466 734.
Camp Ground Rules
- We expect campers to be courteous of others, quiet (no generators, loud music or motorbikes), and keep phone conversations private.
- No smoking in or near the communal camp shed.
- As we are a family orientated farm stay, loud and unruly behaviour including excessive drinking of alcohol will not be tolerated and if you are found to infringe this rule you will be asked to leave.
- Please take all your rubbish with you - no bins available.
- Smokers please be aware of bushfire prevention and dispose of butts with care. No butts to be left on site.
- You may only use the designated shared fire pit for a campfire (no other campfires permitted).
- No campfire allowed on total fire ban days - we take safety very seriously.
- Fires to be kept and maintained to a manageable and safe size, and the campfire must be fully extinguished when unattended.
- You are welcome to wander the left side of our land on Lookout Rd to take photos of the view and use walking/bicycle trails in the forest. Please don't enter our private property on the right of Lookout Rd unless you have sought prior permission from us.
- No driving around the property or trails in vehicles except in designated areas (see map at the camp shed).
- Pets allowed but must be under effective control at all times. Because we have a forest with many native animals, dogs and cats must be kept confined (cage, car or leash) at all times.
- There is an off-lead dog walking beach nearby at Safety Cove.
- Uncontrollable/aggressive or noisy dogs will not be tolerated.
- Please clean up after your pets. This is a public place with children playing at the campground.
